Contrary to reports, the Irish haven't legalized drunk driving

Reports concerning an Irish county council's proposal to allow rural inhabitants to drive after drinking have been greatly exaggerated.

By Jason Walsh,?Correspondent / January 23, 2013

Reported around the globe as a license to drive drunk, an Irish council's motion to permit rural pub-goers to get behind the wheel not only lacks force of law, it's also a slightly odd solution to a serious issue.

It's not often that a vote by five county councilors in rural west Ireland makes headline news, but Danny Healy-Rae managed it this week when he and four colleagues passed a motion to allow drinkers to drive home ? albeit at a severely restricted speed and only on barely-used backroads.

The political response? The same as that of the Irish public: bafflement and embarrassment.

Leo Varadkar, minister for transport, said he disagreed with the council's motion and stressed the affect of the story spreading across the globe. "It doesn't really send out a good message internationally about Ireland," he said.

One fact that has barely been reported in the scramble to play-up rural Irish alcoholic clich?s: It's not going to happen. As a county council motion, the proposal has no legal status.

Irish people are keenly aware of the country's drink-sodden image, with many feeling Mr. Healy-Rae's motion plays to outdated prejudices about the country.

The move may not seem so out of the blue as it first sounds, though. Not quite, anyway.

Healy-Rae proposed the motion as a response to isolation in rural areas, particularly among the elderly and would help to counter "depression and suicide." He said permits could be issued allowing holders to have "two or three drinks" and then still drive home.

"They're traveling on very minor roads, often on tractors, with very little traffic and it's not right they're being treated the same as the rest of the traveling public and they have never killed anyone," he said.?"The only outlet they have then is to take home a bottle of whiskey," he says, "and they're falling into depression, and suicide for some of them is the sad way out."

To be sure, pubs in country areas of Ireland are at the center of community life and are more than just drinking dens, which is something even the motion's critics acknowledge. And going to the pub and drinking nonalcoholic drinks is already an option, as is the option of hiring a bus.

Healy-Rae is a member of a colorful County Kerry political dynasty known for rural populism ? and occasional support for strange causes including, most recently, removing the number 13 from vehicle license plates.

He is also a pub owner ? as are three more of the total five councilors who supported the idea. Three voted against the idea, seven abstained, and 12 were absent from the meeting.

Despite widespread criticism, the motion has attracted some support. Independent Galway councilor Michael Fahy says he will raise the idea at the next council meeting.

The chances of the government agreeing to the idea? Less than the amount of alcohol in a glass of tap water. The country has worked hard in recent decades to reduce road deaths, both by upgrading the road network and by stricter enforcement of the rules of the road.

Ireland's road death rate hit an all-time low in 2012, with 161 lives lost, 25 fewer than the previous year. It is has the sixth lowest road death rate the in EU.

McCain: Immigration reform failure would cost GOP

(AP) ? Sen. John McCain is warning fellow Republicans that failure to pass comprehensive immigration legislation could mean continued election losses for the GOP, as Republican-friendly states like Arizona fall to the Democrats.

The Arizona Republican, one of eight senators to sign onto a bipartisan immigration reform framework this week, says failure to act means the trend of Hispanic defections from the GOP would continue.

Latino voters supported President Barack Obama in large numbers in November, helping to ensure his victory.

McCain said that the demographics of states like Arizona with growing Hispanic populations "means that we will go from Republican to Democrat over time."

McCain spoke alongside Democratic Sen. Charles Schumer of New York at a breakfast hosted by Politico on Wednesday.

Investing Based on Economic News

A reader writes in, asking:

?I am a recent retiree looking to balance protection and income in my investment portfolio in this difficult economy. Given the recent troubles in the eurozone and the news that the UK might leave the EU, do you think US investors should be moving away from european stocks??

Generally speaking, I do not think it makes sense to adjust one?s allocation to a given stock, industry, or country based on economic news.

The reason I don?t think it makes sense to make such changes is that new information about a stock (or a group of stocks, such as a country or region) is typically reflected very quickly in the stock?s price. (This is what people mean when they say the market is ?efficient.?)

As a result, investing based on economic news is an ?early bird gets the worm? sort of thing. And, if you found out about the news in question by reading it on CNN, Google News, or some other website with many thousands of readers, you are?not?the early bird.

In fact, you wouldn?t even be the early bird if you were the journalist writing the story. If you were the source the journalist called to get?information?about the story, then you?might?be the early bird. (Or rather, you might have been the early bird, if you had acted on the information several days or weeks ago.)

In other words, you can reasonably expect to earn extra returns by reacting to economic news only if you have reason to think that the rest of the market:

  1. Doesn?t know about the news (though you would then want to be careful of insider trading rules), or
  2. Is interpreting the news incorrectly (and therefore pricing the stock or group of stocks incorrectly).

And given how many analysts there are paying attention to every corner of the market, such situations don?t arise terribly often for most investors.

I think Vanguard Chief Economist Joe Davis gave excellent advice in a 2012 interview for Vanguard?s client?newsletter:

?I encourage our clients to try to minimize the attention they pay to economic news, because I think that can actually lead to the pitfall of wanting to react.?

Three mystery Samsung Galaxy Tab profiles spotted: GT-P8200 model houses 2,560 x 1,600 display?

Three mystery Samsung Galaxy tablets profiles spotted

While we know Samsung's planning plenty for us to see in Barcelona in a few weeks, we're still not certain on the specifics. Perhaps, then, it's got a handful of tablets for us. That's what these handful of User Agent profiles purport to show us. The model numbers GT-P3200, GT-P5200 and the GT-P8200 suggest that they'll join the Galaxy Tab family, although these profiles only give us a little detail to work on. The GT-P3200 appears to be the entry-level slab, with a 1,024 x 600 resolution more suited to tablets of yesteryear. This is cranked up to 1,280 x 800 for the P5200, while the GT-P8200 will apparently match the Nexus 10's pin-sharp 2,560 x 1,600 display.

Unfortunately, there's nothing here to confirm screen-size, processing punch or much else, although we managed to sniff out an AnTuTu benchmark for the GT-P8200 that reckons it'll house a (presumably multicore) 1.7GHz processor and Android 4.2. However, like these User Agent Profiles, we're looking at these results with a suspicious glare until something more official surfaces. Between the trio, there's likely to be a division between two different sizes of tablet -- possibly either side of that Galaxy Note 8 that's set to be make an appearance next month. Check out the GT-P8200's short-but-sweet benchmark listing after the break.

'Duh': McCain thinks your questions are dumb, reporters

Arizona Sen. John McCain (Mark Wilson/Getty Images)

John McCain heard your question, and he thinks it's really dumb.

While the Arizona Republican senator fielded questions on Capitol Hill Tuesday, a day after he joined a bipartisan group of senators to announce a blueprint for comprehensive immigration reform, one reporter asked how he would respond if the proposed provision that requires increased border enforcement were challenged.

He would oppose it, he said. "Duh."

As part of the outline of principles for an immigration overhaul unveiled Monday by McCain and seven other senators, any new overhaul would require enhanced border security before illegal immigrants already in the country could begin to seek a path to citizenship. Republicans have insisted that it be a key component of any large immigration bill.

Listen to the exchange between McCain and the reporter here:

Reporter: "How do you feel about not tying border security to citizenship?"

McCain: "What do you mean 'not tying it'

Reporter: "Basically your plan..."

McCain: "Didn't you see the press conference? Did you happen to miss it? What do you mean, 'not tying?'"

Reporter: "But if somebody were to come out with a statement saying..."

McCain: "If somebody were to come out that's in contradiction to what we said, we'd say we disagree with it. Duh."

Bill Seeks Protection for Enormous Condors

A bill has been introduced to the Peruvian Congress that would protect Andean condors, a huge species of raptor that is in decline and in danger of dying out in some parts of its territory.

Backers of the bill would like to do away with an Andean ritual in which condors are strapped to the backs of raging bulls, which conservationists say hurts and kills the birds, according to Andean Air Mail & Peruvian Times, a regional news website. The law would declare the birds a "national treasure" and implement jail sentences for anybody who hurts or kills one.

Andean condors are some of the largest birds on Earth, with 10-foot (3 meter) wingspans. They can fly up to 100 miles (160 kilometers) in a single day, and they feed on the remains of dead animals like cattle and other large mammals. The birds inhabit the Andes Mountains, ranging as far north as Colombia and south to Patagonia. There are approximately 10,000 condors left, and they are classified as "near threatened" by the International Union for Conservation of Nature.?

The bill targets a ritual called the "yawar" festival, in which a condor, representing indigenous people, is tied to the back of a wild bull, representing colonists, according to Reuters. The clawing of the bird enrages the bull; townspeople then take turns running in front of the angry bovine. It's unclear exactly how the ritual affects the birds, according to the news service, although some scientists say it leaves the condors too traumatized or injured to survive.

There are probably no more than 500 condors in Peru, and the population is in decline, according to the Peruvian Times. The bird's population takes a while to grow since the animals are long-lived and reproduce infrequently. The bill would lead to a captive breeding program for the condors, according to the Times.

The Andean peoples have held Condors sacred for thousands of years. A 445-foot (135 m) depiction of a condor is one of the best known Nazca Lines, the geoglyphs mysteriously carved into the Peruvian desert more than 1,500 years ago, according to Reuters. Quechua-speaking communities throughout the Andes consider the bird sacred.

The bill was sponsored by Peruvians who live near Colca Canyon, a popular tourist destination twice as deep as the Grand Canyon, now home to just 25 condors, a fraction of those seen in years past, Reuters reports. The Colca Canyon Provincial Mayor Elmer C?ceres said his province slaughters donkeys every week and leaves them as food for the condors, according to the Peruvian Times.

He told that site that some 80 percent of the region's visitors come to see the birds, and asked Peruvian supporters of the legislative initiative to visit the province's website and sign a petition to save the condor. It's too early to say if, or when, the bill might be passed, according to reports.

Apple reportedly readying 128GB "Ultimate" iPad 4 for launch

Apple reportedly readying 128GB

No sooner was support for 128GB NAND flash storage capacities found in iOS 6 beta 5, than reports pop up saying Apple is readying 128GB "ultimate" versions of the iPad 4 for launch. The news come by way of Mark Gurman of 9to5Mac, who typically has excellent sources on imminent product releases.

We?ve gotten word from sources that Apple is preparing to release (in some fashion) a single, additional iPad model. This would be a new SKU for the current fourth-generation iPad with Retina display line. At this point, we do not have pricing information, so it is definitely difficult to pinpoint exactly what this new iPad model is.

The code names are listed as P101 Ultimate and P103 Ultimate. Gurman stresses that it's not a new iPad, or iPad 5, or anything like that, simply a new, higher capacity version of the current iPad 4, in both Wi-Fi and Wi-Fi + Cellular, and in both white and black.

In early 2008, Apple bumped the original iPhone from 8 to 16GB, so this type of new SKU launch isn't unprecedented. While it lacks the oomph of a completely new model, given that the iPad was refreshed in both March and October of 2012, it does at least give Apple something new on the market, and at 128GB, and presumably at the pricier end of the line-up, at the top of the market.

No word yet on 128GB versions of the iPad mini, or of the iPhone 5 or iPod touch 5.

Anyone compelled enough by big storage to consider a new purchase when/if he hit stores?

Dick Van Dyke honored for lifetime achievement

LOS ANGELES (AP) ? He's acted, danced and sang his way through movies, television and the stage, making Dick Van Dyke an entertainment triple-threat long before Hollywood used such hyphenates.

The 87-year-old actor, best known for the 1960s hit comedy "The Dick Van Dyke Show" and Disney's big-screen musical "Mary Poppins," can now add lifetime achievement honoree. He picked up that honor at Sunday night's 19th annual Screen Actors Guild Awards.

"I've knocked around in this business for 70 years and I still haven't quite figured out exactly what it is I do," Van Dyke said after accepting his trophy from presenter Alec Baldwin.

"The years have been full of surprises for me and a lot of fun. Aren't we lucky to have found a line of work that doesn't require growing up?"

Van Dyke's career has spanned eight decades, starting with work as a disc jockey and a standup comic in the late '40s. He even worked as a national television morning-show host, with no less than Walter Cronkite serving as his news anchor.

But perhaps Van Dyke's most critical career break came in 1960, when director Gower Champion hired him as the male lead opposite Chita Rivera in the new Broadway-bound stage musical "Bye Bye Birdie."

Van Dyke had no professional dance experience, and out-of-town tryouts did not go well. Nevertheless, Champion refused to fire the actor, who would go on to New York with Rivera and win a Tony award for his performance.

About a year later, Van Dyke was starring in his own sitcom, in the role of TV comedy writer Rob Petrie on "The Dick Van Dyke Show." Three prime-time Emmys for Van Dyke and more than 50 years later, the series remains revered by many critics as one of the earliest models of great workplace comedy.

"'The 'Dick Van Dyke Show' was the most fun I ever had and the most creative period of my life," he said on the red carpet.

During the series' run, Van Dyke also enjoyed big-screen hits, including the 1963 "Birdie" movie and the 1964 all-star comedy, "What a Way to Go!" But biggest of all was "Mary Poppins," in which he introduced the Oscar-winning song "Chim Chim Cher-ee."

"I'm world-famous for my Cockney accent," Van Dyke kidded in his acceptance speech. He has said his British-born co-star, Julie Andrews, told him he never got the accent right.

Van Dyke also saluted the room full of actors who gave him a standing ovation.

"I'm looking at the greatest generation of actors in the history of acting. You've all lifted the art to another place now," he said. "Besides that you're everywhere. You're in Darfur, Somalia, Haiti. You're all over the place trying to do what's right.

"This very heavy object here means that I can refer to you as my peers. I'm a happy man, God bless."

Last year, Van Dyke presented the same lifetime achievement honor to his former TV co-star, Mary Tyler Moore.

These days, Van Dyke sings with his vocal group, The Vantasix, and enjoys life with his wife of one year, makeup artist Arlene Silver. The couple met seven years ago at the SAG Awards.

"They tell me you never work again once you get this award," Van Dyke said on the red carpet. "I'll have to let them know I'm available."

Monday finish for foggy Farmers Insurance Open - SBNation.com

The 2013 Farmers Insurance Open won't be settled on Sunday, as Saturday's play was postponed due to poor weather conditions. The event now extends into Monday.

Pea-soup fog put Tiger Woods? pursuit of his eighth win at Torrey Pines on hold for at least another day and probably two.

Woods never even got to the course, since, after essentially a day-long interruption, only three players finished one hole of Saturday?s scheduled third round. It was the second time in three weeks that weather wrecked havoc on a PGA Tour event, with thick fog the culprit this time.

After eight hours of delays, officials finally suspended play at the Farmers Insurance Open, set a 10 a.m. ET resumption of competition and expected to complete the tournament on Monday -- weather permitting.

?If Mother Nature doesn't cooperate, we don't have very much control over that,? said Mark Russell, the tour?s VP of competition. ?We're going to be out here, ready to play, and see what happens.?

If all goes well -- and that, ironically, would include rain and wind moving in to blow away the dense fog that kept the course in a shroud all day Saturday -- golfers will play as long as daylight allows and finish up on Monday.

This will be the second event of the nascent season slated to spill over beyond its originally scheduled finish. Heavy winds caused the season-opening Hyundai Tournament of Champions at Kapalua to start on Monday, the day it had been slated to end. Officials reduced that event to 54 holes. This time, the 78 players who made the 36-hole cut will play off two tees on Saturday, with a brief break for lunch between rounds.

The last time weather shortened this event to 54 holes was in 1998, but Russell said that would not happen this year.

?We basically, lost the whole day to day. So we'll be back here in position at 7 in the morning, and we're going to play golf all day until dark, and then when it gets dark, we'll suspend play, and we'll come back Monday morning and finish the championship if the weather cooperates,? he said. ?That is the plan.?

In addition to the mess the weather was making of the Farmers, 17 players in the field this week were slated to play the Monday qualifier for next week?s Phoenix Open. Among them was Billy Horschel, who will play alongside Woods for the duration at Torrey.

Russell noted that those players would have the latest possible times in Phoenix so they would have a chance to finish up in San Diego and get to the qualifier in time.

While weather woes caused flashbacks to Kapalau, where officials had to wipe out play twice, this time players had completed two rounds before the delays. On Saturday, Hunter Mahan, Robert Garrigus and John Mallinger finished one hole -- the 10th -- before officials halted play after just five minutes.

Russell expected golfers would have to play between nine and 12 holes on Monday.

For Woods, it was something of a deja vu. He won at Torrey Pines in 2005 after fog caused a similar delay.

Golf Channel will pick up the action at 1 pm. ET and run through 2:30 p.m., with CBS going on air between 3 p.m.-6:30 p.m.

Colts Legend Jeff Saturday Announces His Retirement After 14 ...

Six time Pro Bowler and two-time All-Pro Center Jeff Saturday announced his retirement Friday, and everyone in Indianapolis should be giving him a standing ovation for everything he did for both the Colts, and the NFL in general.

Jeff Saturday was always a guy that worked tirelessly in the background, never asking for the spotlight, and always did his job without calling attention to himself. It makes perfect sense, then, that he announced his retirement from the NFL on the Grady and Big Joe show, heard locally here in Indianapolis on 1070 The Fan.

You can listen to the audio of the interview here.

Saturday will be best known league-wide for all his work in the labor dispute that occurred in the 2011 Offseason. He was the key negotiator for the Player's Associated, and without Saturday, it really is unclear whether a season would have been played last season without him. The iconic picture came with him and Patriots Owner Bob Kraft hugging at the press conference after they announced we'd be getting back to football.

Saturday was undrafted coming out of North Carolina in 1998, and while the Ravens had the first shot at him, but was cut before Training Camp even started. He didn't have a home during the '98 season, and signed with the Colts right after the 1998 season in January of '99. He only played in 11 games in his first season in Indianapolis, starting twice at Left Guard, but he impressed the Colts so much that me moved returning Center Larry Moore to Right Guard, and then started 185 of the next 191 games through the 2011 season with the Colts, a good portion of that time as the best Center in the NFL.

He was named to six Pro Bowls, and was named a First Team All-Pro twice, in 2005 and 2007. His most memorable game is easily the 2006/07 AFC Championship game, where he had two career-defining moments. The first one was made by his alter ego "Jeff Friday", recovering a Dominic Rhodes fumble in the end zone to tie the game at 28 early in the 4th quarter. That's the play everyone remembers, but was not his best play of that game, and it wasn't even close. We all know that Joseph Addai goes untouched into the end zone to score the winning touchdown, but he got in so easily thanks to the greatest block in Indianapolis Colts history by Jeff Saturday on Vince Wilfork. He demolished him, clearly a two-lane highway for Addai to run through. I rarely watch Addai on that play any more. I only watch Saturday.

Saturday spent 2012 in Green Bay, and despite his Pro Bowl selection this year, was benched after Week 14. Football is a rough sport, and when your body gives out, even when it did it at such a high level for so many years, it's better to step aside and let somebody else play. Acme Packing Company, SB Nation's Packers blog, had some really nice things to say about Saturday as well.

While Saturday was unsure what his future will be, whether it would be television, coaching, a front office job, or just relaxing at home with his family, we all wish Jeff and his family the best in his retirement. It's a given he'll be inducted into the Colts Ring of Honor, and a bust in Canton is certainly a possibility too.

Wife of female Army officer can join spouses club

(AP) ? A woman who is married to a female Army officer at Fort Bragg and who was recently denied membership in its officers' spouses club said late Friday that she has been invited to become a full member.

Ashley Broadway told the Associated Press that she received the invitation from the club's board in an email Friday.

The invitation came on the same day that Broadway also learned she'd been named Fort Bragg's 2013 "Military Spouse of the Year" by Military Spouse magazine. She is married to Lt. Col. Heather Mack, who gave birth this week to the couple's second child, a baby girl.

"I'm pleased, I'm happy," Broadway said by phone Friday night. "As soon as things calm down with the baby, I want to get involved. I hate that it took so long for them to come to this conclusion. But I think things happen for a reason. I'm a very devout Christian. I've had faith in God this whole time. I think if anything it's brought up a larger issue: We have two classes of service members and how they're... not treated equally."

"Looking back, it's been a blessing in disguise because people are talking... in Washington, this is being talked about," she added.

Last month, Fort Bragg received national attention when Broadway was denied membership in the officers' spouses club at the North Carolina Army post because she does not have a spouse identification badge issued by the military.

Though she and Mack have been together for 15 years, the only pass post officials would provide to Broadway named her as a caregiver to their 2 1/2-year-old son ? the same credential given to nannies.

The club announced it would allow Broadway admittance as a "guest member," but Broadway said anything less than full membership wasn't acceptable.

In an email Friday, a copy of which was provided by Broadway to AP, the board of the Association of Bragg Officers Spouses writes that "in order to immediately support all military Officer spouses who are eligible for ABOS membership a more inclusive definition of spouse is needed. Therefore, any Spouse of an active duty commissioned or warrant Officer with a valid marriage certificate from any state or district in the United States is eligible for ABOS membership."

The email continues, "We would like to offer you to become a full member of ABOS. Our next event is in February, in which we are doing a Murder Mystery event dinner. We welcome both you and LTC Mack to join us."

Broadway said she's looking forward to becoming involved in club activities.

"I'm not one to hold grudges or anything," she said. "I hope to get to know these ladies and we'll go from there ? do activities, so that we can better the lives of people here at Fort Bragg."

The couple's case is an example of how nearly a year and half after President Barack Obama and Congress ended "Don't Ask, Don't Tell," same-sex couples are faced with daily reminders of the conflict inherent in serving openly as gays and lesbians under a government that still refuses to acknowledge their relationships.

Pentagon officials say they are bound by the 1996 Defense of Marriage Act, which forbids the federal government from recognizing any marriage other than that between a man and a woman.

The U.S. Supreme Court is expected to rule on the constitutionality of DOMA in June, but advocacy groups say there are numerous steps the Pentagon could take now to treat struggling same-sex military couples more fairly.

Among the steps proposed by such advocacy groups as OutServe-Servicemembers Legal Defense Network and the American Military Partner Association are issuing military IDs to same-sex spouses, ensuring spouses have full access to on-base social programs, and letting same-sex couples qualify for military housing. Pentagon officials say the proposals are under study.

Temple Run 2: Undocumented Features & Tips | Video Game Blog ...

The documentation for this addicting mobile game is sparse. With the Android version now available, there will no doubt be new runners, and the in-game tutorial will only go so far. The built-in trainer will teach players the basic mechanics of using the?accelerometer?to collect coins (known as tilting in the game), swiping to evade obstacles?and double-tapping the screen to activate the power-ups. But in what this game does not reveal to players is the fact that these power-ups/abilities are stackable.

When the character?s power-up ability is, for example, set to boost and the coin magnet icon is grabbed, the two will complement each other. Players can concentrate on dodging obstacles instead of tilting the game screen to navigate the character to grab the coins. Now assuming the player has reached the distance set by the coin value ability, the money being racked may even make Scrooge?McDuck?quirk an eye. He will need a second vault to hold all this money being gained!

A more detailed look at these abilities are as follows:

Note: The power-ups are not automatically active at the game?s start. Players have to accumulate at least 250 gems (by default) to charge it up before it can be activated by double-tapping. These bonuses can be improved by spending gems.

Boost
This power-up makes the game character move faster. All obstacles?are neutralized?when this mode?is engaged. When players are in this mode, the accelerometer replaces the need to swipe (to direct) the character in which direction to go.

Shield
Prevents the character from tripping, getting burned or smashing his or her head open. When one of the three is encountered, the shield turns off. Also, this feature does not save the avatar from falling or being washed away in the river. This feature is good for those who find themselves running into obstacles quite often, but useless for distance runners since leaping or sliding is infinitely easier.

Coin Bonus
As the name implies, more coins?are earned when activated.

Gem Bonus
Players earn extra two gems when activated.

?

Note: These are slotted abilities where the more coins invested in each item will mean an increase or decrease in the cost of an item?s feature within the game.

Shield Duration
By default, the shield lasts for?approximately?30 seconds before the battery runs out. The more coins invested in this ability will lengthen its duration.

Coin Value
After a certain distance?has been reached, each coin?s value will be worth 3x its net weight. The more money invested in this feature, the less distance is required to get this bonus. For example: two notches require players to reach 3,000 metres?to get this bonus. Three notches mean?a distance of?2,500 metres?needs?to be?achieved.

Coin Magnet
Like Shield Duration, this feature comes in very handy for players simply focusing in on dodging obstacles instead of money grabbing. When paired with Boost and Coin Value, this multi-combination?can be?very powerful when activated by a combination of power-ups that?appear?in the game.

Boost Distance
This feature?should not be?overlooked by runners trying to reach the distance required in the Coin Value ability for triple a coin score. Each notch adds?200 metres.

Pickup Spawn
This ability?should be?the first item to get upgraded. The odds of random power ups within the game are about ten to one, and it improves by a?factor?of about 7% per notch purchased.

Power Meter
This feature is very handy for players often making?use of?self-activated power-ups. It allows for a faster charge-up. For example, at two notches, power-ups activate after gathering 180 coins.

Save Me
Dying often? The gems to activate this option do not appear often and by the time enough of them is accrued, they can be spent fast. Nearly four hours of game time?can be eaten away for players to collecting just 50 of these emerald pieces. Instead of using this feature prematurely, be frugal.?The best time to use this feature is when that threshold in the Coin Value ability?is reached.

Head Start
This feature is more useful for the impatient, namely players who do not want to deal with the first?250 metres?of the game. But practice makes perfect in a game that depends on lighting fast reflexes.

Score Multiplier
This feature is fairly self-explanatory. It does not affect the value of the coins gained, but can look good when players are advertising their scores in either the Apple Game Center or the Google Play Leaderboard.

Famous bridge in India is in danger of coming down ... because of spit

Engineers say that Kolkata?s landmark Howrah bridge is in danger because gutkha chewing tobacco spit is corroding its pillars. Now activists are trying to ban the acidic tobacco.

By Shaikh Azizur Rahman,?Contributor / January 20, 2013

Indians bathe on the banks of the River Ganges River beside the landmark, Howrah Bridge on a cold winter morning in Kolkata, India, last week.

It was first reported in 2010 that the pillars of Kolkata?s landmark Howrah bridge were being used as spittoons by pedestrians who chewed gutkha?? a tobacco product popular with millions in India.

Engineers who surveyed the cantilever structure then reported that the struts supporting the girders of the bridge had already lost half of their metal casing: The corrosion was apparently caused by acids in the gutkha.

Soon the Lions Club of Howrah launched a ?Save Howrah Bridge from Spit? campaign urging people not to spit on the bridge. ?

The campaign spread across the city of Kolkata, where reddish-brown gutkha stains are visible almost everywhere ? pavements, streets, office staircases, business houses, and residential complexes. Prominent citizens of Kolkata joined the campaign in an effort to rid the city of the ugly stains.

Gutkha is a commercially produced pre-packaged mixture of crushed betel nut, tobacco, lime, paraffin, and other ?secret? ingredients, many of which are carcinogenic and addictive.

Some brands of gutkha also contain lead, arsenic, chromium, nickel, and cadmium, which are as bad as nicotine. To make its shelf life longer, magnesium carbonate ? which is used in fire extinguishers and is a known carcinogen ? is also added to gutkha.

Activists reported about a year ago that one-third of men and one-fifth of women across India are addicted to chewing tobacco and gutkha was its most popular form.

Because of its candy-like flavor and dirt-cheap prices ? 4 to 6 cents per sachet ? gutkha has become increasingly popular among children, who chew and even eat it. An estimated 5 million of India?s children are addicted to gutkha, and every day another 5,000 try it for the first time, according to reports last year by the American Cancer Society.

Research indicates that tobacco kills 1 million Indians annually and that gutkha alone leads to 80,000 cases of oral cancer every year ? the highest incidence in the world. In recent years an anti-gutkha campaign has picked up steam across the country with several nongovernment organizations lobbying for a ban on gutkha.

In August 2011, India?s Food Safety and Standard Authority issued a regulation declaring that no foodstuff, including gutkha, could contain tobacco. Last year some states began following the order by banning gutkha.

With Andhra Pradesh and Odisha states having banned it earlier this month, the manufacture and sale of the product has now been prohibited in 17 of India?s 28 states and 3 of the 7 union territories (UTs), including New Delhi. However, reports in many local newspapers suggest that gutkha?is being smuggled from other regions and is still being sold in many states.

Kolkata-based anti-gutkha campaigner Sekharesh Ghoshal said that states and union territories should cooperate and ban the tobacco in the national interest.

?Sachets of gutkha display a warning that it?s dangerous for health. Yet gutkha users do not pay any attention to such health risks and keep on chewing it,? says Dr. Ghoshal.

?Unless gutkha is banned and actually made unavailable in the market, you cannot stop people from using it. A ban only in parts of the country is of no help.?

But in many states the gutkha companies are fighting the ban by taking the local government to court.

They argue that gutkha is a tobacco product that cannot be classified as a foodstuff, and therefore cannot be banned. Still, courts in most states have upheld the ban.

Bela Naskar, the mother of two child addicts in a slum in Kolkata, says she vehemently supports a ban on gutkha.

?My 10- and 13-year-old sons have been into gutkha for some years. They take several sachets of it every day. It?s bad for their health. But they don?t listen to my warnings.?

?We really need a ban on gutkha in our state,? Ms. Naskar says. ?Otherwise I shall not be able to rid my children from this dangerous addiction.??

Ecological DIY Scrubbing Cleansers - Articles :: Networx

undefinedWhen faced with dirty bathroom tile or a stove top caked in cooked on grease, it is so tempting to reach for the bottle of Prefab Toxic Scrub That Will Not Be Named or to chicken out and call a cleaning lady. For less money, and without the toxic fumes, you can make your own DIY ecological scrubbing cleansers. I have tried them myself and I can attest to the fact that they work. You'll feel great knowing that you are flushing fewer harsh chemicals into the water supply, and you'll love scrubbing the tub without inhaling nasty fumes.

1. Castile soap and baking soda: Networx writer Sayward Rebhal, who is an expert when it comes to ecological living and who keeps her house so naturally clean that her landlord will definitely not be calling a Los Angeles tile contractor to regrout when she moves, introduced me to this scrubbing cleanser. Squirt a ring of castile soap on the surface that you are cleaning, and then generously sprinkle baking soda over the ring of soap. Wet a sponge, and scrub away. This is an excellent tub cleanser. I personally clean my tub with it, and I am satisfied with the results. Bonus tip: Dr. Bronners makes a nice thick household cleaning soap called Sal Suds. You can use regular castile soap, but for extra heavy duty cleaning, try the Sal Suds. It smells really good, too, like pine.

2. Dish soap-based scrubbing cleanser: The lovely and vivacious Mary Beth from Cupcakes and Crinoline posted this fabulous recipe on Hometalk.com, the online home improvement community. Her recipe: A quarter of a cup of baking soda, one tablespoon dish detergent, enough distilled vinegar to make a paste from the first two ingredients. Stir it up. Put some on a sponge and scrub away. This works exceptionally well for cleaning stove tops.

3. DIY antibacterial scrubbing cleanser: Thank you to Jill from One Good Thing for posting this recipe. This DIY scrubbing cleanser is similar in ingredients to the previous two recipes, but it includes tea tree oil, which is a natural anti-bacterial and anti-fungal agent. A note: Be careful when using tea tree oil. It can irritate skin if the undiluted oil comes in contact with skin. Its smell is also strong; I advise you to use it for cleaning in diluted form only. Just a couple drops of tea tree oil is all you need. I have reduced the amount of tea tree oil in the recipe so that the cleanser is less irritating. Mix together three quarters of a cup of baking soda, a quarter of a cup of castile soap, 1 tablespoon water, 5 drops of tea tree oil, and one tablespoon of vinegar to make a paste. Then put it on a sponge and scrub away!

Chaya Kurtz writes for Networx.com.

Stella Maris School negligence cost student's life | Nyasa Times ...

Stella Maris Secondary School is a prestigious instituion, but the recent death of of one of the students has created a blot in its image., leaving her family in state of despondency, Nyasa Times has learnt.

Georgina Nkhata 18, a form four student, died on Thursday evening at queen Elizabeth Central Hospital (QECH) where she was rushed to due to cerebral-Malaria.

She was buried over the weekend at her home village, Benjamin T/A Kandulu in Mwanza.

According to one of the family members and one of school teachers, Nkhata was denied to access medical attention by the school?s administration after she reported sick earlier last week.

Chide, Ministry of Education spokesman: No immediate comment

Chide, Ministry of Education spokesman: No immediate comment

?She died on January 17, which was her birthday. The family is in distress right now and we don?t know what to do because as an education institution we trusted it with the life of our child; and now their negligence to provide necessary medical attention has led to her death,? lamented one of the family members.

The school, according to the information Nyasa Times has gathered, played down the Nkhata?s sickness; instead it opted to administer pain-killers on her without proper diagnosis from certified medical expert. Her situation, eventually, worsened, resulting into her demise.

?When she reported sick, the school authority disregarded it, saying it was not all that serious. Instead, they gave her Panados, but nothing changed until Thursday when the situation worsened. They contacted her parents before rushing her to Queen Elizabeth Central Hospital where she was pronounced dead on arrival?.

In an interview with Nyasa Times, the school?s deputy headmaster, a Mr. Zulu while confirming the death, refused to comment further and referred the issue to the Ministry of Education.

?I will only give you the school?s version of the story on that death unless we are permitted by the Ministry, but as of now we can?t comment further on that,? said Zulu.

However, efforts to talk to the Ministry?s Public Relations Officer (PRO), Lindiwe Chide proved futile as she could not answer her phones and her office said she was locked up in a meeting every time we called.

Collaborated interviews with several teachers and students revealed that the Catholic-owned education institution headed by Sister Chikhwiza operates on strict rules and regulations, which played part on the death of Nkhata.

?Apart from restricting visitations, the students are mostly denied permission to seek medical attention from any hospital unless the condition is critical. Most of the times the administration opts for its own medical care although we don?t have trained medical practitioner,? disclosed one of the teachers.

Stella Maris is one of the Catholic Church run Secondary Schools with support from the Ministry of Education.

Internet Advertising Bureau Sees Increase in Online Performance Ads

UK businesses spent ?814 million ? over a billion US dollars ? on affiliate marketing and lead generation activities in 2012, according to a new report from the Internet Advertising Bureau UK (IAB) conducted by PwC.

The report says that these activities generated ?9 billion in sales and that consumers conducted around 100 million direct transactions. The research points to a need for businesses to ensure they have their online marketing organised.

The research showed that 5-6% of all UK e-commerce retail sales were driven by online performance marketing (OPM), where advertisers pay someone once when a defined action takes place, like making a purchase through affiliate marketing or submitting contract details to create leads, because of an advertisement.

Although this method is used frequently, by brands including USwitch, Compare the Market, Nectar and Quidco, the IAB says that it is still considered to be an insiders? tool. Tim Elkington, Director of Research & Strategy at the Internet Advertising Bureau, says:

?Despite around 3,500 advertisers and 10,000 publishers engaging in Online Performance Marketing it still has the air of a ?best-kept secret?. This is particularly surprising, considering each year it drives more than two online purchases for every UK adult and causes the equivalent of every UK person to fill out a form showing interest in a product ? generating ?11 of revenue for every ?1 spent.?

Biggest spenders

The biggest spenders in OPM are in the financial sector with insurance and credit card advertisers taking the lead with 45% of expenditure. This is followed with 20% by clothing, accessories and electrical and computing advertisers. The top five are rounded out with telecoms and media, travel and leisure and gaming.

The amount spent on OPM is different in each sector. Although finance is the biggest spender overall, the IAB report says that this equates to around 2-10% of online marketing budgets whereas telecoms and media typically allocate 20-30% to this method.

The use of OPM appears to be growing according to this research. Between 2008 and 2012, OPM expenditure grew by 57%. Suppliers of OPM services and technology estimate that their revenue will grow by 25% this year.

The survey was based on 27 detailed submissions from 23 companies with two different submission forms. One based on affiliate marketing and the other on lead generation. Some companies provided information based on both. IAB says that the survey captures revenue from major players in the OPM market which represent thousands of websites.

Anna Bartz, Senior Manager at PwC, says that the current economic climate has seen businesses tightening their belts and seeking alternative methods for advertising. She notes:

?Economically challenging times have seen marketing budgets squeezed and greater evidence required of return on investment. As a result, we expect that the attractiveness of paying for advertising based on an extremely measurable and specific consumer action will see more advertisers using Online Performance Marketing as a key channel for driving sales.?

The rest of the report is available to IAB members on the company?s website. Though many Internet consumers will be aware that these methods for advertising are around us as we browse, it seems that we can expect more of a presence in the coming months.

People seek high-calorie foods in tough times

Jan. 22, 2013 ? Bad news about the economy could cause you to pack on the pounds, according to a new study published in Psychological Science, a journal of the Association for Psychological Science.

The study shows that when there is a perception of tough times, people tend to seek higher-calorie foods that will keep them satisfied longer. When subconsciously primed with such messages, a "live for today" impulse is triggered causing people to consume nearly 40 percent more food than when compared to a control group primed with neutral words.

"The findings of this study come at a time when our country is slowly recovering from the onslaught of negative presidential campaign ads chalked with topics such as the weak economy, gun violence, war, deep political divides, just to name a few problem areas," said Juliano Laran, an assistant professor of marketing at the University of Miami School of Business Administration, who conducted the research with doctoral student Anthony Salerno. "Now that we know this sort of messaging causes people to seek out more calories out of a survival instinct, it would be wise for those looking to kick off a healthier new year to tune out news for a while."

Further, when the same group primed with "tough times" messages was then told the food they were sampling was low-calorie, they consumed roughly 25 percent less of the food. According to the researchers this is because if people perceive that food resources are scarce, they place a higher value on food with more calories.

Several studies were conducted as part of the research. In the first one, the researchers invited study subjects to join in a taste test for a new kind of M&M. Half the participants were given a bowl of the new candy and were told that the secret ingredient was a new, high-calorie chocolate. The other half of the participants also received a bowl of M&Ms but were told the new chocolate was low-calorie. All of the participants were told that they could sample the product in order to complete a taste test evaluation form.

In reality, there was no difference in the M&Ms that the two groups were given to taste. The researchers were actually measuring how much participants consumed after they were exposed to posters containing either neutral sentences or sentences related to struggle and adversity. Those who were subconsciously primed to think about struggle and adversity ate closer to 70 percent more of the "higher-calorie" candy vs. the "lower-calorie" option, while those primed with neutral words did not significantly differ in the amount of M&M's consumed.

"It is clear from the studies that taste was not what caused the reactions, it was a longing for calories," continued Laran. "These findings could have positive implications for individuals in the health care field, government campaigns on nutrition, and companies promoting wellness. And, certainly beware of savvy food marketers bearing bad news."
