Gunmen in Pakistan shoot dead seven aid workers near capital
PESHAWAR, Pakistan (Reuters) - Gunmen ambushed and shot dead six Pakistani women aid workers and a male doctor on Tuesday, police said, and the charity they worked for said it suspected the attacks were linked to recent murders of polio vaccination workers.
Their vehicle was raked with gunfire as they returned home from work at a children's community center run by Pakistani charity Ujala, or Light, said district police officer Abdur Rashid Khan. Their driver was seriously wounded in the attack.
The shooting in Swabi district, about 75 km (45 miles) northwest of the capital of Islamabad, was the first attack on aid workers in the area.
The victims worked at the center for aid agency Support With Working Solutions, whose head Javed Akhtar said they had told their other 160 staff to suspend work following the killings.
The organization is involved in health education in underdeveloped parts of the country, Akhtar said. It had run a school and dispensary in Swabi and helped vaccinate children against polio, a disease that can cripple or kill within hours of infection.
He suspected the shootings might be linked to a string of attacks on polio vaccinators last month.
"This seemed to be part of the campaign against the polio drive by certain anti-polio elements," he said.
Two weeks ago, gunmen killed nine health workers taking part in a national polio vaccination drive in a series of attacks. Most of the victims were young women earning about $2 a day.
The Taliban said they did not carry out those attacks although its leaders have repeatedly denounced the vaccination program as a plot to sterilize people or spy on Muslims.
Aid workers have frequently been kidnapped or killed in Pakistan, a nuclear-armed nation of 180 million that is struggling to contain a Taliban insurgency and plagued by endemic corruption and violent crime.

?iPhone 5S? to reportedly launch by June with multiple color options and two different display sizes
AppleAfter a seven-month run that took Apple?(AAPL)?shares to an all-time high in late September, the company?s stock plummeted more than 25% and touched new lows as 2012 drew to an end. According to Topeka?Capital?Markets analyst Brian White, Apple?s strong portfolio, a reversal of the negative news trend surrounding the company, and a fresh new ?iPhone 5S? ?will help the stock rebound in 2013, and he maintains a Buy rating on Apple shares with a sky-high price target of $1,111.

?Apple is our top overall pick for 2013,? White wrote in a note to investors on Wednesday that discussed Topeka?s stock picks moving into the new year. ?With the 25% correction in Apple?s stock from the high in September, the stock is now trading at just 7.7x our CY13 EPS estimate (less cash) and the company?s portfolio has never been stronger, in our view.?

He continued, ?We believe tax-related selling was largely to blame for the downward bias in the stock price as we exited 2012 and this created a negative news cycle around Apple that we believe will be broken as we enter 2013. We believe there is still plenty to look forward to at Apple, including the potential for greater choices (i.e., colors, sizes) around the next iPhone in 2013, combined with accelerating momentum with the iPad mini and continued strength with the iPad franchise at large.?
White went on to explain that the iPad mini has seen incredible demand thus far in China, outselling the full-size iPad in the country. The analyst also called the rumored China Mobile iPhone launch and release of Apple?s HDTV ?moving targets,? and he expects at least one of these major catalysts to become a reality in 2013.
In a separate note, White said that according to his checks with Apple?s suppliers, the next-generation iPhone will represent a huge departure from earlier models.
?Our checks indicate that the next iPhone will have more choices for customers,? the analyst wrote. ?This entails an expansion in both the color patterns and screen sizes with the next iPhone (i.e., likely called the iPhone 5S) that we currently believe will be launched in May/June with certain supply production starting in March/April.?
White believes the next iPhone will be available in five different colors: pink, yellow, blue, white & silver and black & slate. He also believes there will be two different screen sizes available on the device, marking the first time Apple has released one phone with multiple display size options.
?Our checks are also indicating that the next iPhone will offer customers more choice in terms of screen size,? White reported. ?Although Apple offers a 4-inch screen on the iPhone 5 and a 3.5-inch screen on the iPhone 4S and iPhone 4, the Company has never offered multiple screen sizes for a single model. We believe this is about to change with the next iPhone offering different screen sizes that we believe will allow Apple to better bifurcate the market and expand its reach.?
He continued, noting that multiple screen sizes could allow Apple to better address emerging markets with a lower-cost iPhone.

A new variant of the Google Glass augmented-reality headset has been spotted in New York ? one with prescription lenses, which should be welcome news to nearsighted gadget-lovers?around the world.
The device (in Google muted red) was photographed?at a restaurant in New York?by an anonymous tipster, who then sent the picture?in to the blog Road to Virtual Reality. The now-familiar shape of the Glass prototype, with battery pack behind the ear and visor arm in front, adorns a pair of ordinary metal-framed prescription?glasses.
It may come as no surprise that Google,?a company with so many four-eyed nerds (like us!), should make their tech compatible with them, but it's not always possible. Some methods of presenting 3-D or augmented reality simply don't work when paired with glasses, whether for optical or ergonomic reasons. That means that millions don't get the opportunity to see movies in 3-D or try out the latest display technologies.
But luckily for the glasses-wearing public, Google's highly?anticipated headset appears to work well enough to take on the road, although there may still be limitations relating to other visual conditions, like astigmatism.
Google Glass isn't yet available for the public, but a $1,500 "Explorer Edition" developer kit is set to ship early in 2013, at which point it should be slightly more common to see the devices in the wild.

NASA mulls plan to drag asteroid into moon's orbit
Who says NASA has lost interest in the moon? Along with rumours of a hovering lunar base, there are reports that the agency is considering a proposal to capture an asteroid and drag it into the moon's orbit.
Researchers with the Keck Institute for Space Studies in California have confirmed that NASA is mulling over their plan to build a robotic spacecraft to grab a small asteroid and place it in high lunar orbit. The mission would cost about $2.6 billion ? slightly more than NASA's Curiosity Mars rover ? and could be completed by the 2020s.
For now, NASA's only official plans for human spaceflight involve sending a crewed capsule, called Orion, around the moon. The Obama administration has said it also wants to send astronauts to a near-Earth asteroid. One proposed target, chosen because of its scientific value and favourable launch windows for a rendezvous, is a space rock called 1999 AO10. The mission would take about half a year, exposing astronauts to long-term radiation beyond Earth's protective magnetic field and taking them beyond the reach of any possible rescue.
Robotically bringing an asteroid to the moon instead would be a more attractive first step, the Keck researchers conclude, because an object orbiting the moon would be in easier reach of robotic probes and maybe even humans.
Catch and release
The Keck team envisions launching a slow-moving spacecraft, propelled by solar-heated ions, on an Atlas V rocket. The craft would then propel itself out to a target asteroid, probably a small space rock about 7 metres wide. After studying it briefly, the robot would catch the asteroid in a bag measuring about 10 metres by 15 metres and head back towards the moon. Altogether it would take about six to 10 years to deliver the asteroid to lunar orbit.
The project still needs some technical and scientific fine-tuning, says co-leader Louis Friedman of the Planetary Society, but he sees it as an important boost to exploration.
For instance, NASA has also expressed interest in putting astronauts on an outpost parked in orbit at the Earth-moon Lagrange point 2. From there they could study a captured asteroid using telepresence technology, or even practise human landings on its surface.
Such work could help develop ways to use asteroid material for construction or spaceship fuels, making the captured asteroid a stepping stone for human missions to larger asteroids and eventually to Mars.
A moon-orbiting asteroid would probably also be of interest to private companies proposing human missions to the lunar surface for scientific exploration and mining studies.

Senate passes massive tax cut which raised ... - Legal Insurrection
There are too many metaphors here applicable to the Senate?s 89-8 passage of a ?fiscal cliff? bill in the middle of the night (around 2 a.m. this morning).
The bill raised taxes by over $600 billion, in addition to Obamacare taxes already coming on line, yet the Senators can claim it was a massive tax cut because the vote took place after midnight, so technically the Bush tax cuts already had expired.

Senate leaders had been waiting to schedule the vote until they had received an official score from the Congressional Budget Office, which provides estimates for the budgetary impact of legislation.
But even though that score was released before the measure was voted upon, it?s unlikely that many senators had the chance to read the entire 157-page bill before casting their votes early Tuesday morning.
Support for ? as well as opposition to ? the compromise spanned the ideological spectrum. The eight senators voting ?no? were Democratic Sens. Tom Harkin (Iowa), Tom Carper (Del.), Michael Bennet (Colo.) and Republican Sens. Mike Lee (Utah), Richard Shelby (Ala.), Rand Paul (Ky.), Chuck Grassley (Iowa) and potential 2016 White House hopeful Marco Rubio (Fla.).
The Republican Senators voting against the bill were Rubio, Paul, Grassley, Lee, Shelby, and the Democrats were Harkin, Bennet and Carper.? Not voting were DeMint, Lautenberg, and Kirk.

The measure is the first significant bipartisan tax increase since 1990, when former President George H.W. Bush violated his ?read my lips? promise on taxes. It would raise an additional $620 billion over the coming decade when compared with revenues after tax cuts passed in 2001 and 2003, during the Bush administration. But because those policies expired at midnight Monday, the measure is officially scored as a whopping $3.9 trillion tax cut over the next decade.
Now it goes over to the House.
The most intereting part of the bill that we know of so far is that the automatic sequester cuts are delayed for two months, so there will be another big fight combining the sequester cuts and debt ceiling.? This delay is one of the selling points the Republican leadership is using to sell the bill.
The theory is?that the spending cuts and entitlement reforms have not been surrendered, they will be fought over soon in a context in which the ?rich? already have seen their taxes go up so spending and entitlements, not taxes, will be the only things on the table.
Obama already signalled in his offensive press appearance yesterday that he was not buying into that narrative, and that more ?revenue? would be on the table again.
