Why Do 2012 F1 Cars Have Broken Noses?

2012 Ferrari VJM05

The 2012 Formula One season is just a few weeks from kicking off and all this year's cars have been revealed at this point, but one thing has been bothering me: Why are they so ugly? With the exception of Mercedes McLaren, the latest crop of normally sleek racers are sporting a jarring bump right in the middle the nose. For vehicles that are the aerodynamic equivalent of airplanes for the ground, it seems like a problem. So what's driving this crooked nose? A rules change, naturally, and one aimed at improving safety.?

F1 is a sport of trends. One chassis builder will figure out a trick and start winning, then the others will follow and improve upon it. The trend as of late has been higher and higher noses that are flat underneath and curved towards the pavement. It seems like this would create lift, but the rushing air slams into a flat plate extending forward of the bottom of the body and through other ducting. This creates downforce. A higher nose means more air being scooped up, producing even more downforce.

As the noses got higher, they exceeded the minimum height of the driver's open cockpit?putting the driver at significant danger should a side impact occur. To address this, the rules were changed to place a maximum height on the nosecone ahead of the front bulkhead (essentially ahead of the wheels) at 55 cm. The area behind the bulkhead maintains the same 62.5 cm height restriction, so to same time, money, and previous aerodynamic developments, the teams are leaving that section alone. Thus, the 2012 lumpy nose comes from a battle between aerodynamics and new rules.

Scientists score new victory over quantum uncertainty

ScienceDaily (Feb. 26, 2012) ? Most people attempt to reduce the little uncertainties of life by carrying umbrellas on cloudy days, purchasing automobile insurance or hiring inspectors to evaluate homes they might consider purchasing. For scientists, reducing uncertainty is a no less important goal, though in the weird realm of quantum physics, the term has a more specific meaning.

For scientists working in quantum physics, the Heisenberg Uncertainty Principle says that measurements of properties such as the momentum of an object and its exact position cannot be simultaneously specified with arbitrary accuracy. As a result, there must be some uncertainty in either the exact position of the object, or its exact momentum. The amount of uncertainty can be determined, and is often represented graphically by a circle showing the area within which the measurement actually lies.

Over the past few decades, scientists have learned to cheat a bit on the Uncertainty Principle through a process called "squeezing," which has the effect of changing how the uncertainty is shown graphically. Changing the circle to an ellipse and ultimately to almost a line allows one component of the complementary measurements -- the momentum or the position, in the case of an object -- to be specified more precisely than would otherwise be possible. The actual area of uncertainty remains unchanged, but is represented by a different shape that serves to improve accuracy in measuring one property.

This squeezing has been done in measuring properties of photons and atoms, and can be important to certain high-precision measurements needed by atomic clocks and the magnetometers used to create magnetic resonance imaging views of structures deep inside the body. For the military, squeezing more accuracy could improve the detection of enemy submarines attempting to hide underwater or improve the accuracy of atom-based inertial guidance instruments.

Now physicists at the Georgia Institute of Technology have added another measurement to the list of those that can be squeezed. In a paper appearing online February 26 in the journal Nature Physics, they report squeezing a property called the nematic tensor, which is used to describe the rubidium atoms in Bose-Einstein condensates, a unique form of matter in which all atoms have the same quantum state. The research was sponsored by the National Science Foundation (NSF).

"What is new about our work is that we have probably achieved the highest level of atom squeezing reported so far, and the more squeezing you get, the better," said Michael Chapman, a professor in Georgia Tech's School of Physics. "We are also squeezing something other than what people have squeezed before."

Scientists have been squeezing the spin states of atoms for 15 years, but only for atoms that have just two relevant quantum states -- known as spin ? systems. In collections of those atoms, the spin states of the individual atoms can be added together to get a collective angular momentum that describes the entire system of atoms.

In the Bose-Einstein condensate atoms being studied by Chapman's group, the atoms have three quantum states, and their collective spin totals zero -- not very helpful for describing systems. So Chapman and graduate students Chris Hamley, Corey Gerving, Thai Hoang and Eva Bookjans learned to squeeze a more complex measure that describes their system of spin 1 atoms: nematic tensor, also known as quadrupole.

Nematicity is a measure of alignment that is important in describing liquid crystals, exotic magnetic materials and some high temperature superconductors.

"We don't have a spin vector pointing in a particular direction, but there is still some residual information in where this collection of atoms is pointing," Chapman explained. "That next higher-order description is the quadrupole, or nematic tensor. Squeezing this actually works quite well, and we get a large degree of improvement, so we think it is relatively promising."

Experimentally, the squeezing is created by entangling some of the atoms, which takes away their independence. Chapman's group accomplishes this by colliding atoms in their ensemble of some 40,000 rubidium atoms.

"After they collide, the state of one atom is connected to that of the other atom, so they have been entangled in that way," he said. "This entanglement creates the squeezing."

Reducing uncertainty in measuring atoms could have important implications for precise magnetic measurements. The next step will be to determine experimentally if the technique can improve the measurement of magnetic field, which could have important applications.

"In principle, this should be a straightforward experiment, but it turns out that the biggest challenge is that magnetic fields in the laboratory fluctuate due to environmental factors such as the effects of devices such as computer monitors," Chapman said. "If we had a noiseless laboratory, we could measure the magnetic field both with and without squeezed states to demonstrate the enhanced precision. But in our current lab environment, our measurements would be affected by outside noise, not the limitations of the atomic sensors we are using."

The new squeezed property could also have application to quantum information systems, which can store information in the spin of atoms and their nematic tensor.

"There are a lot of things you can do with quantum entanglement, and improving the accuracy of measurements is one of them," Chapman added. "We still have to obey Heisenberg's Uncertainty Principle, but we do have the ability to manipulate it."

How to Get the Most Out of Your Business's Twitter Customer Service

Learn How Serve Your Customers on Twitter

Becoming angry with customer service is a regular thing nowadays. They actually expect to go through bad customer service just because too many businesses do not understand the real value of good quality customer support. Moreover, by the time they become aware of it the damage is already done. In spite of this, companies can make themselves look good by utilizing ground-breaking instruments, such as Twitter. We are speaking about both probable and established customers. When it comes to customer service, the following article reviews three distinctive suggestions for benefiting from Twitter. Win Spy Software

Understand the importance of using Twitter to listen to your customers. Even though this is obvious, it is ignored, forgotten or just poorly managed. On the other hand, simply listening to your customers is also of no use. You should follow as many people as possible who are interested in your niche, including your customers of course. You should learn how to spot the dominant trends and issues that are most vital to your business. This will enable you to make your own answers as timely and relevant as possible. The better you use Twitter for customer service, the less will be the noise and the better will be your response. Flirt Mastery The fact is, Twitter will probably only be one of several aspects of your customer service, but it?s often the first place where you?ll become aware of an issue. Your main responsibility is to answer the customer?s question or solve their problem in the most efficient possible way. A tweet is just one way that customers can let you know that they need help, a kind of virtual knock on your door. Make sure you respond back to this knock effectively. Make your customer service as diverse as possible, so people have the choice of tweeting, emailing or phoning you. When you make a priority out of customer service, you?ll be making a strong statement that you really care about your customers. Registry Fix

In terms of creating the strongest possible impression on the people who follow you on Twitter, you need to make sure that you are proactive with the customer service that you offer. Don?t just react or wait for people to say bad stuff. You will get a much better response from your other customers when you are proactive in your approach.

It will ensure that you?re receiving more of positive comments than negative ones. The more you can focus on this one thing, the better off you will be. Being proactive and actually engaging your customers is the real key to finding long term success on Twitter. It?s important to be straightforward and ease your way into things.

Providing superior customer service to your customers should not be ignored. When you apply the weight that Twitter and other social sites can provide, you not only simplify your job, but you also make your customers joyful. Twitter lets you have a chance at being more approachable. It lets your customers feel like they are appreciated by your business. By being quick with your customer service, you end up presenting a good image of your company and you get more business from them. Therefore, you should make a move and put this advice to use to improve your customer service via Twitter and gain greater responses.

Considering Edith's OK Cupid Profile

Dan Kois: I agree with June. Downton is guilty of a lot of sins, but one of them isn't misdirection. I think if Bates or O'Brien or Anna or Sir Richard or anyone killed Mrs. Bates, we'd know about it by now. This is not a show that keeps secrets. The most likely result, I think, is that Mrs. Bates was so villainous that she killed herself to frame Bates. (And yes, we did see her face, didn't we? I sure remember seeing it.)

In recent years, a number of controversial claims have been made about the female mammal's egg supply that it is renewed over her adult lifetime (as opposed to the conventional understanding that she is born with all of her eggs), and that the source of these eggs is stem cells that originate in the bone marrow. Now, Weizmann Institute scientists have disproved one of those claims and pointed in new directions toward resolving the other. Their findings, based on an original method for reconstructing lineage trees for cells, were published online today in PLoS Genetics.

The method, developed over several years in the lab of Prof. Ehud Shapiro of the Institute's Biological Chemistry, and Computer Science and Applied Mathematics Departments, uses mutations in specific genetic markers to determine which cells are most closely related and how far back they share a common parent cell, to create a sort of family tree for cells. Shapiro and members of his lab, including Drs. Shalev Itzkovitz and Rivka Adar, together with Prof. Nava Dekel and research student Yitzhak Reizel of the Biological Regulation Department, used their method to see if ova could be descended from bone-marrow stem cells. Their findings indicated that any relationship between the two types was too distant for one to be an ancestor of the other.

These scientists also found, surprisingly, that the ova of older mice had undergone more cell divisions than those of younger mice. This could be the result of replenishment during adulthood, but an alternate theory holds that all eggs are created before birth, and those that undergo fewer divisions are simply selected earlier on for ovulation. Further experimentation, says Shapiro, will resolve the issue.

Cell lineage trees are similar to modern evolutionary and taxonomic trees based on genome comparisons between organisms. Shapiro and his team used mutations in cells that are passed on to daughter cells over an organism's lifetime (though not on to the next generation). By comparing a number of genetic sequences called microsatellites areas where mutations occur like clockwork they can place cells on trees to reveal their developmental history.

A number of papers published by Shapiro, his team and collaborators in recent months have demonstrated the power and versatility of this method. One study, for instance, lent support to the notion that the adult stem cells residing in tiny crypts in the lining of the colon do not harbor, as thought, "immortal DNA strands." Immortal strands may be retained by dividing stem cells if they always relegate the newly-synthesized DNA to the differentiating daughter cell and keep the original stand in the one that remains a stem cell.

A second study addressed an open question about developing muscle cells. Here they found that two kinds of progenitor cell - myogenic cells, which eventually give rise to muscle fiber, and non-myogenic cells found within the same muscle are more closely related than similar cells in different muscles.

One immediate advantage of the cell lineage analysis method developed by Shapiro's team is that it is non-invasive and retrospective, and as such can be applied to the study of human cell lineages. Most other studies of development rely on genetically engineered lab animals in which the stem cells are tagged with fluorescent markers. In addition to providing a powerful new research method that does not rely on such markers, Shapiro believes that it could one day be adapted as a diagnostic tool that might, for instance, reveal the history of an individual's cancer and help doctors determine the best course of treatment.

Bill Maher Calls Newt Gingrich 'A Batman Villain' On 'Late Late Show' (VIDEO)

Bill Maher makes no secret of his antipathy toward Newt Gingrich. He recently mocked Gingrich's attack on the New York "elite" on his HBO show, and on "The Late Late Show" (Weeknights, 12 a.m. EST on CBS) Tuesday night he pulled no punches, comparing Gingrich to both excrement and a "Batman" villain.

Maher seemed surprised when host Craig Ferguson told him that Gingrich had appeared on the show, and having already referred to the former Speaker of the House as "the biggest, fattest turd from the '90s," Maher said "Newt Gingrich is a 'Batman' villain."

No, not a Heath Ledger "Dark Knight"-style scary villain, Maher was talking old-school, Cesar Romero-type villain.

"I mean like from the old Adam West 'Batman'. ... I'm talking about a fat, over-the-hill character actor with two henchmen in dog suits in a warehouse."

Maher also poked fun at Gingrich's religious convictions: "He was born a Lutheran, then went to Baptist -- probably to win an election in Georgia -- and now he's a Catholic. I love people who have three of 'the one true faith'!"

"The Late Late Show" airs Weeknights at 12 a.m. EST on CBS.

[Women's Basketball] Mims joins 1000-point club as Mustangs hold ...

Photo of Mount Mercy women's basketball player Micha MimsLA CROSSE, Wis. ? Micha Mims joined the 1,000-point club, Emily Greiner poured in a game-high 28 points and Becca Lampe knocked down some big free throws late as the 13th-ranked Mount Mercy women?s basketball team wrapped up the regular season with a 70-65 victory at Viterbo (Wis.) on Saturday at R.W. Beggs Gymnasium.

The Mustangs nearly saw a 16-point lead slip away in the second half. Mount Mercy trailed for most of the first period but led, 31-30, at the break. They were up, 63-47, with six minutes to go before a V-Hawk comeback that had the home team within two, 67-65, with 21 seconds remaining. Lampe hit 3-of-4 free throws and blocked a 3-point attempt by Jenna Engh that sealed Mount Mercy?s eighth straight Midwest Collegiate Conference victory.

Mims was held to just six points on Saturday, but she needed only five to become the 27th player in school history to score 1,000 points. Greiner, who joined the 1,000-point club earlier this season, drilled four 3-pointers and was 8-of-10 at the foul line during her 28-point outing. She also had four rebounds and four steals.

Lampe was scoreless until those three free throws in the last 21 seconds, but the points were huge. So were her team-high seven rebounds. Bria Fields ended up with 12 points and five boards, Laura Lippert had nine points, three blocked shots and three steals and Amanda Frost talled six points and four rebounds.

Laquita Becker?s 13 points and 11 rebounds led the V-Hawks, who beat Mount Mercy the first time around, 54-51, on Jan. 21 in Cedar Rapids. Shannon O?Toole had 11 points and seven boards while Dani Templin and Brooke Anderson chipped in eight points each.

Mount Mercy (23-7, 15-3 MCC) earned the No. 2 seed in the 2012 MCC Women?s Basketball Tournament and will host seventh-seeded Ashford (10-19, 6-12 MCC) in the quarterfinals on Thursday at 7:00 p.m. at Hennessey Recreation Center. Other quarterfinal matchups include eighth-seeded AIB (13-17, 6-12 MCC) at top-seeded Grand View (25-5, 17-1 MCC), sixth-seeded St. Ambrose (12-15, 8-10 MCC) at third-seeded Iowa Wesleyan (17-10, 13-5 MCC) and fifth-seeded Viterbo (10-20, 8-10 MCC) at fourth-seeded William Penn (11-18, 9-9 MCC).

Saturday?s semifinal games are hosted by the highest remaining seeds and will be played at 7:00 p.m. If the Mustangs win their quarterfinal, they would host the winner of Iowa Wesleyan and St. Ambrose. The other semifinal would feature the Grand View/AIB winner against the William Penn/Viterbo winner. The MCC championship game will be hosted by the highest remaining seed on Monday, Feb. 27, at 7:00 p.m.

With 10 teams in the league this year, the MCC gets two automatic berths in the national tournament. The regular season and tournament champions get those. If it?s the same team, the runner-up in the regular season receives the second bid. The 21st Annual NAIA Division II Women?s Basketball National Championship is March 7-13 at the Tyson Events Center in Sioux City.

Architect pleads not guilty in LA fireman's death (AP)

LOS ANGELES ? Authorities charge that the sprawling home a German architect designed and built was shoddily put together, contributing to the death of a firefighter who died when a water-saturated ceiling collapsed on him during a fire.

Gerhard Albert Becker, 48, who also owned the mansion and was the construction contractor, pleaded not guilty to involuntary manslaughter Wednesday in Los Angeles County Superior Court.

Authorities allege that the shoddy way the home was built, including putting a fireplace on the third floor that was designed only for outside use, caused the blaze.

"The fire started as the result of gross negligence," Los Angeles Police Chief Charlie Beck said. Beck also said he was not aware of any other case in which shoddy building work led to an involuntary manslaughter charge.

"It's certainly rare," he said.

Becker was jailed on $2 million bail and ordered to return to court March 1 for a preliminary hearing. His attorney, Chad Lewin did not immediately return a message left for comment.

As the blaze that began in the fireplace raged through the house, authorities said, it melted a plastic sprinkler pipe. That filled a false ceiling that was made of drywall and wood with water and caused it to collapse.

The ceiling gave way as firefighter Glenn Allen was fighting the flames. Chainsaws had to be used to free Allen from the debris, and he died two days later. Five other firefighters were injured.

Allen, 61, had been with the Los Angeles Fire Department nearly 40 years and was less than a year away from retirement.

Before the just-completed three-story home burned down on Feb. 16, 2011, it was to have been the location for a photo shoot for the reality TV show "Germany's Next Top Model."

Becker left the country soon after the fire, but authorities said there was no indication he was fleeing to avoid arrest. He is a German citizen and his 90-day visa was about to expire, Beck said.

He was arrested Saturday by FBI agents and authorities when he arrived in Los Angeles from Spain, where he also has a home.

St. Maarten Named 'Best Caribbean Shopping Experience' by ...

A zipline adventure at Treetops, on St Maarten.

The island of St. Maarten (www.VacationStMaarten) has received the 2012 Editor-in-Chief Award from Porthole Cruise Magazine as the ?Best Caribbean Shopping Experience?.

The award is determined based on those in the cruise and travel industry that have ?gone above and beyond in terms of service, quality, and excellence,? according to Bill Panoff, editor-in-chief, Porthole Cruise Magazine.

Porthole Cruise Magazine, now in its 16th year and featuring a circulation of 500,000, is published bimonthly and offers cruise and destination related feature stories, as well as information on industry trends, ship reviews, destination features, and much more. The magazine recently formed a new partnership with World Travel Holdings, one of the nation?s biggest leisure travel companies.

?We are honored to be chosen as the Best Caribbean Shopping Experience by Porthole Cruise Magazine,? said May-Ling Chun, interim Director of Tourism for the St. Maarten Tourist Bureau. ?We truly offer something for everyone in terms of shopping trinkets and treasures and it is nice to be recognized for that by a leading publication in the cruise industry,? she added.

St. Maarten?s capital, Philipsburg, is the epicenter for shopping with boutique stores lining Front Street, which stretches for over a mile. Shoppers will find that most prices are as much as 50% less than other countries and are quoted in U.S. dollars saving the confusion of sorting out the exchange rate.

Along Front Street, stores range from Tiffany to Tommy Hilfiger. The Sint Rose Shopping Mall on the boardwalk by Front Street features Cartier, Lalique, and Faconnable.

Old Street, situated off Front Street, is highlighted by 19th century houses which contain specialty shops. Maho Plaza (located by the Sonesta Maho Beach Resort) is another area for name-brand stores.

?Whether travelers come for our beaches and spas or our cuisine and nightlife, one thing is certain ? they never return home empty handed,? said Chun.

St. Maarten offers great buys on jewelry, a perennial favorite among shoppers, with jewelers offering everything from loose stones to original designs.

International fashion items such as Gucci and Ralph Lauren can be found at reasonable rates, as well as fine leather goods, top-of-the line cosmetics and state-of-the-art electronics.

Art enthusiasts will delight in native prints and crafts pieces as well as works from artists all over the Caribbean.

For more information on St. Maarten visit the official site of the St. Maarten Tourist Bureau at www.VacationStMaarten.com.

Email To Fax Service ? 7 Benefits That Can Help Your Business ...

Traditional fax machines are costly, inconvenient and waste time using and maintaining.

You often also have to deal with the piles of menus, ads and other junk that is normally sent to your fax machine most every day. Of course, this not only wastes your paper but ink cartridges as well. Both can be costly, and a complete waste of time and money if spent on junk faxes since you can?t filter what can and doesn?t need to be printed. Everything that comes in is printed.

The next consideration is the cost to operate the fax. You have to keep your fax turned on 24/7 and have an additional phone line as well. These two costs can add up every month.

And then is the inconvenience of having to print and scan?everything you fax. First you need to print the document, or scan it if it?s already in paper form, but sometimes you have to copy something as well since it won?t fit into your fax machine feeder. If an item is from a catalog,?book or magazine, you first have to copy?it and then fax it. Normally this ends up being a big pile of paper you then need to load into the fax and hope that the paper doesn?t bend, jam and goes throughstraight.

Using an email to fax service resolves all of these costs and issues and allows you more freedom and control of your fax communications.

Email to fax services let you send all your fax correspondence through email or an online control panel. Some providers also allow you to print a document from any application on your computer directly to a fax that you can then customize and direct it to the person you are faxing to.

You can also receive your incoming faxes as an attachment to your email.

The many benefits to using an email fax service are many including:

Ease of use. You can print anything on your computer from any application to a PDF or Word file and send it as an attachment using your email application. Some providers also allow you to print from any application on your computer directly to their fax software.

Freedom. You can send and receive a fax anywhere in the world as long as you have a computer and internet access. Either using a shared computer, or your own, you can quickly send, receive and review faxes.

Lower cost. You save big on paper, ink cartridges, electrical costs, machine maintenance, the cost of a fax machine as well as monthly phone line expenses.

No busy signals. Since all faxes arrive in your email, there is no busy signal when you send and no busy signal when you receive.

Organization. You can now feel more comfortable to know that all your correspondence can be easily organized either through your email or at your email fax service online control panel. Most providers allow you to store your faxes online so you can find what you need quickly as well as take care of all your fax correspondence easily, in one place.

No waiting. No need to stand in line to use the fax, or waiting to receive one. Faxes are sent through your email fax service and sent to your email inbox so you can quickly review them at your convenience.

Eco friendly. You aren?t only saving on electricity, but also on ink and paper, only printing what is necessary without adding more garbage and paper to landfills.

Email fax services differ in cost, quality of services and features and it?s best to compare the features that are important to you or your business and determine which email to fax service works best for you.
